Oberon Heritage & Collectors Club

The Oberon Heritage & Collectors Club Inc was established in June 2008.

In February 2008 a group of local enthusiasts presented a small but highly successful display of heritage equipment at the Oberon Agricultural Show.

That same group of enthusiasts realised there was potential to form a club dedicated to heritage machinery and collections in the village of Oberon located in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales.

A public meeting was called and that event indicated that there was sufficient interest to form a viable club.

That club became known as the Oberon Heritage & Collectors Club Inc. It’s founding President was Jim Hawkes and Secretary/Treasurer, David McMurray.

The Club was officially launched in June 2008 when it hosted its first event, that of hosting a tour by the Goulburn Historic and Classic Car Club of our members sheds.

Oberon’s historical past had a close alliance with steam, both on the road and rail. That alliance still holds an important position in modern Oberon’s timber industry.

For many years, all produce and manufactured goods were transported from Oberon by train. Steam power was and still is a necessary element in the timber processing industry.

Today there is a nucleus of a permanent community of steam enthusiasts resident in Oberon. The Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway Society is restoring the old line and the dream of running a train once more should be a reality by 2011. Working road engines are being restored and stored in town.

The Oberon Heritage & Collectors Club decided that a major display of heritage vehicles of all types would occur annually and naturally, that event became known as the “Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair” That fair is an important activity of the club.

Oberon Heritage & Collectors Club Inc is a small enthusiastic club made up of members from all regions of New South Wales and the Untied Kingdom. Their collections are varied and eclectic , and range from steam traction engines to sewing machines and anything in between.

The club has adopted a professional attitude to all its activities and in the process has developed a list of primary objectives that are far reaching.

We aim to encourage the collection and preservation of items with heritage value or historical interest relating to the social, cultural, industrial and rural history of Australia.

We encourage and advise all collectors in preserving and showing their collections.

We encourage camaraderie amongst our members in social activities.

The Club aims to engage the public in an informative and friendly way to appreciate and preserve the heritage of Australia’s social, cultural, industrial and rural history.

Our Club’s major activity is to present a heritage fair in Oberon NSW, of the highest possible quality, on an annual basis where people can gather to discuss, display and demonstrate their machinery and collections.

Over time we plan to develop the fair to become the premier fair of its type in New South Wales and noted by all enthusiasts as the best event to display their collections.

That fair will be inclusive of any type of presentation or display or related trade for which heritage fairs are known throughout the world.

We aim to work in harmony and co-operatively with other local associations, interest groups and individuals to achieve a common goal of demonstrating to visitors the continuing pioneering spirit of a unified Oberon community.

And at all times, the Oberon Heritage & Collectors Club together with the Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair is to be used as a vehicle to boost tourism interest for the benefit of the district and to showcase the country charm and simple pleasures for which Oberon and district is renowned.
