You can be a Volunteer

By david - Posted on 11 December 2009

Ever wanted to be more than a spectator at a heritage event?

Volunteering is a way to be involved in the Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair, have a little authority, be responsible yet have a lot of fun.

The Management team is on the lookout for people with common sense who love to assist people while being around machinery of all descriptions.

Jobs are varied and interesting and the shifts are not long and boring.

If you have people skills, are able to take reasonable direction, have a certificate in safety and health or first aid or any other useful qualification or even have an interest in community radio we are interested in talking to you. Or you may have none of the above, we would still like to hear from you.
We would expect you would find the work interesting, challenging and fun.

Volunteers are required for different shifts over five days. You need transport to get to Oberon and be prepared to get involved in an induction course for an hour or so prior to the event.

If you are interested, refer to the volunteers page on this website in the first instance for an application form or contact us.

Rare WW11 Movie Van to be Displayed

By david - Posted on 08 December 2009

North Bondi's Andrew McFarland is the proud owner of a very rare 1940 Chevrolet Army Panelvan that was used to transport cinematic equipment and movies during the Second World War

The vehicle is possibly the only surviving example of this type of vehicular transport in Australia.

Andrew loves to drive and exhibit his Panelvan at selected displays around New South Wales.

See it in the Military sector at the Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair in Oberon in February 2010.

"Sooty" at the Fair in 2010!

By david - Posted on 04 December 2009

John & Barbara Preston of Wellington NSW have entered their 1926 John Fowler Steam Traction Engine in the Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair in 2010.

"Sooty" as the engine is known with great fondness is often seen in vintage rural machinery and steaming events throughout New South Wales.
John & Barbara also have a wonderful collection of very rare and restored wagons and these are more often than not part of their mobile display.

"Sooty" always adds to the colour and spectacle of any event and we are pleased that John & Barbara are making the trip to Oberon again  for the third consecutive year.

Grand Rally a "Must Do" Activity

By david - Posted on 02 December 2009

Saturday morning, 20th February 2010, sees Oberon transform to a gentler era when the Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair Grand Rally proceeds along the main street.

For entrants and visitors alike, the sights, sounds and colour allows a person to imagine they are standing in a street scene straight out of the last century. The Grand Rally is casual and fun and generates excitement amongst spectators of all ages.

The management team is endeavouring to make the Rally a greater spectacle than in past years and it is definitely a "must do" activity.

For this Rally alone, it is worth the trip to Oberon NSW!

Early Holdens to Display En Masse

By david - Posted on 30 November 2009

The 48 & Fj Holden Owners Club (NSW) Inc have been quick to accept the Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair's invitation to come to Oberon in February 2010.

The club caters to unmodified 48-215 and FJ Holdens and has the distinction of being the only strictly unmodified vehicle Club in Australia. The member's vehicles are amongst the best presented early Holdens anywhere in Australia.

There will be at least fifteen  vehicles at the Fair from the club and this will present a unique opportunity to view a very large collection of  early examples of Australia's own car.

Rarely seen Fowler Steam Roller at Fair

By david - Posted on 30 November 2009

Tasmania's Michael De Bomford has entered his Fowler Steam Roller in the 2010 Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair.

Michael recently acquired the Roller locally. Believed to be manufactured in 1925 but possibly 1926, it is partially restored and will not be in steam at the Fair. This will be an opportunity to inspect the machine closely prior to its departure for Tasmania for completion of the restoration to bring it to steam once more.

The Fowler Roller has not been seen in public for many years and is bound to be of interest to road steam enthusiasts from around Australia.

Tractor Pull will test Skill

By david - Posted on 27 November 2009

Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair will be conducting a tractor pull at the Fair that will test the skills of any tractor enthusiast.

A tractor pull is designed to defeat the most ardent fan and the skill is in applying enough power to drag the sled over a specified distance. Not many succeed.

A tractor pull is spectacular, colourful and noisy as vintage tractors , sometimes in tandem, strain against the weights.

Come and see for yourself and be thrilled!

Alternative Accomodation Available in Oberon

By david - Posted on 24 November 2009

Provided there is enough interest, the management team of the Highlands Steam & Vintage Fair will initiate  "Tent City" style accomodation in Oberon during the Fair 19th 20th 21st February 2010.

Accomodation is always tight in Oberon, and if you want the convenience of staying in town and find that Oberon's regular accomodation is fully booked during the Fair, then consider staying at Heritage Central's Tent City.

If you are not familiar with Heritage Central "Tent City", it is an accomodation facility designed for those who simply want to enjoy themselves without the hassle of DIY camping.

We can arrange packages that cater for singles, twin share or triple share. Twin share is ideal, allowing plenty of room for beds, luggage and easy movement within the tent. Families and groups can be allocated tents together but let us know when booking.
Based on twin share the tariff is approximately $39.00 each based on three days.

The stipulation is that we must get a minimum number of bookings in order to go ahead. There isn't a lot of time left before our option lapses.

Contact the Rally Organiser for full details of Heritage Central's Tent City.
